We are among the biggest, yet one of the smallest, Emergency Medicine Residencies in the country. Biggest based on the number of residents and faculty. Smallest based on the personal commitment we make to ensure the professional success and wellness of each and every resident.
Chief residents personally contact all new residents to help everyone settle into Chicago. July begins with a 2 week intern orientation to the County hospital and clinical medicine. A second 2 week orientation in July of the second year introduces the resident to County emergency medicine.
Each new resident becomes a part of a mentoring family. A family is headed by one dedicated faculty mentor and is comprised of a resident in each year of the program. Dinners and frequent conversations help residents to share and learn from each other’s experiences outside the pressure of academics or the clinical arena.
September begins with a Residency Retreat with the Program Directors. All residents escape for two days of team building, fun, relaxation, and planning. February’s inservice is followed by a post exam party to celebrate the winter away.
Biannual one on one progress discussions with a Program Director, focus not just on the completion of residency requirements, but more on each individual resident’s strengths, weaknesses, and often dynamic career plans.
Colleges help individual residents explore different areas of Emergency Medicine from the very beginning of their residency. The Education, Ultrasound, Toxicology, Simulation, EMS, Administration, and Research College all provide unique opportunities for mentoring, participation in ongoing research, additional didactics, curriculum planning, and attendance at national meetings.
The Cook County Athletic Team provides a great opportunity to enjoy the best of Chicago amateur athletics. A training partner can be found for every sport from sprint distance triathlons, volleyball, to the Chicago Marathon. The UIC Sport and Fitness center provides an exceptional, and very affordable, full health club literally one block from the hospital.
All graduates will tell you that residency is the best time of your life. Never will you grow more as a person or physician. Together, we enjoy the journey!
