NEW COOK COUNTY HOSPITAL

The New Cook County Hospital was completed in December, 2002. The new hospital contains 228 medical/surgical beds, 80 ICU beds, 40 Pediatric beds, 40 OB/Gyne Beds and 58 Neonatal ICU beds.   In addition, the emergency department has a 25 bed observation unit immediately adjacent to the ED.

The emergency departments and trauma unit are located in the far western side of the ground floor adjacent to the triage area.  The specialty clinics and pharmacy also occupy the remainder of the ground floor.  The lower level contains the cafeteria with an outdoor eating area, the MRI suites and laboratory.   The second floor houses the most of the diagnostic services including radiology, endoscopy, cardiology, pulmonary and vascular laboratories.  The intensive care units and surgical suites are located on the third floor.  The fourth floor contains labor and delivery and the pediatric areas.  Administrative and mechanical areas are located on the fifth floor.  The sixth, seventh and eighth floors contain the medical/surgical beds that are divided into three separate pods per floor.

The hospital has the latest in diagnostic and therapeutic equipment.  Digital radiology imaging is used throughout the hospital.  Images are visible on GE PACS imaging stations as well as specially designed computer terminals via the internet.  Radiology has three new helical CT scanner including one located in the ED radiology area and three new MRI including an open MRI.   The hospital was designed with wireless technology at the forefront.  Wireless computers on wheels (COWs), palm devices and microcellular telephones allow for efficient flow of patient data throughout the hospital.

Physician order entry is a routine part of the new computer information system.  Patient medical records are scanned into the clinical information system and are available from any terminal within the hospital. On-line physician and nursing documentation are planned to be the next phase of information system implementation.
