Welcome from the Program Director

Cook County Hospital was founded in 1855 with one mission: Provide quality health care to all citizens regardless of their ability to pay. Today the Cook County Hospital Emergency Medicine Residency is committed to continuing this mission of service while training outstanding emergency medicine specialists.

The John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County (The New Cook County Hospital) opened in 2002 as a 480-bed, state-of-the-art teaching hospital on the West Side of Chicago. We are a world-renowned health care facility, that is simultaneously advancing the frontiers of medicine and remaining true to our mission, despite the economic challenges of providing health care to those most in need.

The Emergency Medicine Program has been fully accredited by the ACGME since its inception in 1987. This July we welcomed our first group of interns as we begin our transition from a PGY 2-4 to a PGY 1-4 training program. Our PGY-1 year offers a broad range of clinical experiences, specialized didactics and early exposure to our Emergency Medicine faculty. Additionally, our residency and medical student programs provide:

•A diverse patient population with a broad spectrum of disease

•Comprehensive supervision by dedicated faculty

•A structured curriculum with exceptional clinical teaching and didactics

•The opportunity to make a difference from day one

Thank you for your interest in our program. We are dedicated to recruiting and training students and residents from culturally and ethnically diverse backgrounds. Explore this website to see what we’re all about. If you have any questions, please contact us!
