Senior Elective in Emergency Medicine

For many students, it didn’t “feel” like medical school until their clinical rotations began. Many Cook County residents and faculty will tell you that their clinical training didn’t begin until their first day at Cook County Hospital. From your first day in the Emergency Department as a senior medical student, you will join us and thousands of other physicians who have lived our century-old mission. You will help people who have no one else to turn to. You may be their first and only source of health care. In return, you will experience an astounding variety of common and rare pathology that will continually challenge you.

Objectives

We offer a four-week rotation in emergency medicine to senior medical students from accredited U.S. or Canadian Medical Schools. Students function as interns and learn the diagnostic approach to the acutely ill patient on all three teams in our adult emergency department. With close supervision and individual faculty teaching on every case, students rapidly improve their fund of emergency medicine, medical knowledge, procedural skills, and overall efficiency.
