Senior Medical Student Elective

Purpose and Objectives
The department of Emergency Medicine at Stroger Hospital of Cook County offers a four-week rotation in emergency medicine to SENIOR medical students from accredited American or Canadian Medical Schools. The purpose of the rotation is to provide students with an exposure to the discipline of emergency medicine. Students will become familiar with the approach to the patient in an emergency setting. They will learn to evaluate acutely ill patients and initiate necessary treatment. The student will work in a rich clinical environment and have the opportunity to improve their clinical skills with "intern" equivalent responsibilities. The student will also have direct attending clinical supervision and teaching.

Medical Student Schedule
The rotation begins on Monday morning. Each student will be scheduled for 15 eight-hour clinical shifts during the month. There is a didactic lecture series for the students Monday and Tuesday afternoons from 12:30-3:30.  Topics include splinting, ultrasound, slit lamp examination, suturing, ED procedures, EKG interpretation, photo quiz, residency application, trauma, airway management, chest pain, and patient simulation.  Students will also attend the resident lectures on Wednesday and Thursday mornings.

Method of Evaluation
1)    Clinical evaluation 80%
2)
Examination (100 multiple choice questions) 20%
